Safeguarding

Fiona Lang

Safeguarding in St Columba’s is the responsibility of the Safeguarding Coordinator, who reports to the Kirk Session.  Fiona Lang was appointed by the Kirk Session in January 2017 and is responsible for managing safe recruitment * of  workers and volunteers. She ensures all are trained and supported in their posts, dealing with concerns about witnessed or reported harm and managing the disciplinary process.  Fiona informs and advises the Kirk Session about Safeguarding matters. In line with Church of Scotland Policy, all volunteers are subject to the checks and procedures outlined in the church’s Safeguarding Policy. Volunteers undergo safeguarding training led by a trained trainer thus every member of our Creche and Sunday School teams have been through the safe recruitment process and each holds a valid CRB/DBS clearance dependent on when they were pointed.

The Church seeks to safeguard (protect) the welfare of all people regardless of age, who come into contact with the Church and its organisations through its Safeguarding Service and its contact with statutory agencies. Harm or abuse of any type or level towards children, young people or adults at risk is unacceptable and we will always try to minimise the risk of harm occurring.

*Safe recruitment requires every applicant to intimate 2 referees and submit an application form, a ‘self declaration’ form and a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) application form.
