The next day for collection is Sunday 2 June.

This week’s highlighted book, A Grief Observed deals with the very difficult issue of how one copes with the death of a loved one. The book is little more than an essay in which the author, CS Lewis, writes from very personal experience, following the loss of his wife Joy. This is not an easy acceptance of the situation from this very well known Christian. In fact the book was first published under a pseudonym because he was such a well known Christian writer and in this book he reflects the questioning, the hurt, the struggle that those who are grieving feel. This is a journal of his grief but it has wider relevance. Look out in the June copy of the St Columba’s magazine for our summer reading selection!

Service Unit – Entertainment Coordinator
Would you like to help out in a key Service Unit role?

We are looking for a member to join our existing team of seven. The focus of your role would be organising the entertainment for the spring, autumn and Christmas events. Recent entertainment has included in-house talent such as the St Columba’s Scottish Country Dancers, and singers and musicians from the congregation, as well as entertainers from elsewhere (a children’s gospel choir and young accordionists).

Your fresh ideas will be most welcome. Maybe you have contacts in the entertainment field? However, please be assured that you would be part of a close team in which we all help each other, so no worries if it’s something new to you. The four annual events (including the summer outing which does not require entertainment) take place on Saturdays c.2-5pm, and there are about four committee meetings per annum, on Sundays after the morning service.

The good news is that we have a full syllabus to December 2013. We will be delighted to welcome you aboard as soon as you wish to join, planning ahead, contributing to other committee matters and just seeing how we work.

Please contact Jim Blackwood (chairman):
email – aquatilis321@yahoo.com or telephone 07961 893295.

Second Hand Books
Thank you for all the books which have been handed in for the second hand bookstall in the Library. We are very grateful for all the donations but please no more donations until further notice.

Sunday School
It would be appreciated if parents could both take their children to Sunday School and collect them after the service.

Congregational summer picnic. Sunday 30 June 2013 – SAVE THE DATE
St Columba’s all ages picnic, at which we hope to welcome as many of the congregation as possible, will be on Sunday 30 June in Hyde Park from 1 pm. It is only a 15 minute walk from church to the picnic area and you can either walk with the group that will set off from church immediately after the morning service or make your own way there. Maps will be provided. If anyone would like transport there and back, this will be available. Bring your own picnic. Games and competitions – including prizes for the best decorated cakes. Further details to follow.

To give an idea as to numbers, please let David Kerr know if you plan to come along and if you would like, or can offer, transport. Either email David-Kerr@hotmail.co.uk or leave your name with the office. (We also have a Plan B in the event of wet weather.)

St Columba’s Happy Hour
Happy Hour takes a break in June, July and August but resumes on Wednesday 4 September and on the first Wednesday of each month thereafter. Meetings are held from 6.30 p.m. in a private room of The Wine Tun, 2 – 6 Cannon Street, EC4M 6XX. The Wine Tun is opposite the south side of St. Paul’s Cathedral (nearest Tubes are St. Paul’s and Mansion House).
