Special Events in November

Stories of World War I, Sunday 5th November

St Columba’s has a fascinating First World War history. Between 1915 and 1919 the congregation offered hospitality to nearly 50,000 troops. Identified at the weekend train stations, Scottish soldiers were invited back to Pont Street to wash, rest, eat and socialise, before being piped back to the stations the next day. Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig, elder of this congregation, was one of over three hundred members of the congregation who served during the war. This year members of the congregation were invited to share family stories that related to WW I. The stories did not require a specific St Columba’s connection; they just had to be meaningful to the story teller. A fascinating variety of stories and memorabilia have been collated.

On Sunday 5th November 2017 the congregation can hear some of these tales. Exhibits on show in the Upper Hall after Morning Worship and selected speakers will share their stories, 1.15-2.15pm.
